Om

In Sanskrit, matra is a unit of measurement that represents the time it takes to pronounce a short vowel sound.

Metaphorically, the triple matra is connected to Om, which consists of three short vowel sounds: A–U–M.

The sound A resonates deep in the throat. The sound U carries the vibration forward, linking it to the natural position of the mouth. Finally, the closed lips articulate the sound M.

Thus, Om engages the entire vocal apparatus and is regarded as a symbol of the beginning, middle, and end of all things.
